Good nutrition plays an important role in optimal wellness and chronic disease prevention. It is also plays a very important role in combating everyday insults the body experiences. There are common signs of nutritional deficiencies including: bleeding gums, red and glossy tongue, redness at the corners of the mouth, and patches on the tongue. You may also want to consider a nutritional evaluation if you feel fatigued, have migraines, arthritis, fibromyalgia, depression, allergies, weight gain, or take medications. Medications can affect the way we absorb nutrients from food or supplements. Close to 80% of people tested still have some form of nutritional deficiency, even those taking supplements.
Vitamin D and Vitamin B12 play an important role in our overall health. Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with periodontal disease, heart disease, diabetes, mood disorders, cancer, fibromyalgia and chronic pain, autoimmune disease flares, poor bone health, poor bowel health, and many other conditions and diseases. Low energy, poor immunity, slow metabolism and decreased mental clarity are common signs of Vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D works with several other key vitamins and minerals including: magnesium, calcium, vitamin K, zinc, boron, and vitamin A.
Vitamin B12 is the largest and most complex of all the vitamins. Vitamin B12 deficiency is commonly associated with chronic stomach inflammation, which may contribute to an autoimmune vitamin B12 malabsorption syndrome called pernicious anemia. Impairment of vitamin B12 absorption can also lead to neurologic disorders. Normal function of the digestive system is required for adequate vitamin B12 absorption from foods. Digestion is commonly impaired in individuals over 60 years of age, placing them at risk for vitamin B12 deficiency. Vitamin B12 and folate are also important for prevention of cardiovascular disease and some cancers. Both depression and osteoporosis have been linked to diminished vitamin B12 levels as well.
